Can Pilates help you lose weight? I get asked this question repeatedly as a Pilates instructor. One very effective way to torch some serious calories while also practicing Pilates is a workout I designed formyself when I was working on Broadway. I was looking for a pre-show workout I could do backstage that would keep my body lean, my core powerful, my muscles strong and supple and increase the cardiovascular endurance required to sing and dance at the same time.
I came up with a workout that I call Pilates Shred*. It’s an intervaltraining routine, alternating sets of low-intensity Pilates exercises using resistance bands with sets of highintensity rope jumping. Ideally performed two to three times a week, it’s a great addition to your traditional Pilates practice.I’ve been doing it for years and it still remains challenging. Interval training is basically short periods of high-intensity exercise followed by short periods of a lower-intensity activity. It increases fitness, burns more calories and shreds more fat over a short period of time than training at a moderateintensity for a longer duration. I designed this portable workout so that you can keep moving just about anywhere. All you need is a mat, jump rope and two or three exercise bands of varying resistance levels. I’ve provided modifications to encourage you to slowly build your stamina and versatility in the jump choreography. One last bit of advice: Expect a challenge. Interval training is tough, and jumping rope can be incredibly frustrating at first. You will stumble, hit yourself with the rope, get winded quickly and have the urge to quit. When you get tangled in the rope, simply re-set and keep moving even if you have to stop and start often. One could argue that the most beneficial aspect of jumping rope is that it both reveals and improves your resilience. Ultimately, strengthening our resilience is the most important training we can do for life.
